Description:
The Sangre De Cristo Mountains live by themselves separated from Colorado's other ranges by the beautiful San Luis Valley. The range is unique in its features sporting arid low lands, sand dunes, wet sub alpine areas and young rocky and dramatic peaks that plunge out of the plains. Some of Colorado's hardest 14,000 foot climbs are found in this remote range that extends from Southwest of Denver through New Mexico. The range is accessible from both the east and west but is extremely difficult to get all the way to most trailheads without a 4 wheel vehicle with plenty of clearance. This range is the home of Culebra Peak which is the only privately owned 14,000 foot peak in Colorado. As of early 2000 it changed ownership. It used to be owned and operated by the Taylor ranch and is rumored that the new owners are more strict on access to the peak. We are continuing to gather more information on the proper procedures to gain access to this mountain.
