Description:
The Elk range is found between Aspen and Gunnison and is home to 7 of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks although some may argue 6 due to Conundrum's close proximity to Castle peak. One word that sums up this range perfectly is "rugged". The elks harsh terrain composed of sedimentary, igneous and me dimorphic rocks has prevented mans best efforts to join the Aspen and Gunnison areas with a road suitable to your average automobile. Due to the loose rocky conditions in these mountains, many prefer to climb the elk's during the spring when snow provides more stable conditions. Experienced climbers will find great challenges in the remote and unforgiving territory but its peaks are not recommended for beginners.
